So... has anyone else here read this series? There are 6 volumes, with the last one released about a week ago. I'm hoping to finish it off tonight after work, and I can't get it off my mind, heh.

For anyone who might not be familiar with the series (the basis for the upcoming movie and video game), it's basically a comedy love story set in a world filled with video game conventions (and there are TONS of game tributes throughout the comic). The characters are extrememly fleshed out with very realistic personalities, and there is a lot of strong character development throughout the series. Reading this comic totally made me flash back to my college years. The relationships between the characters just seem so true to life, which keeps the story very grounded despite the more oddball elements like characters with psychic powers and traveling through subspace (insert SMB2 reference), and off course the epic boss battles as Scott fights off Ramona's seven evil ex-boyfriends (who tend to drop coins/items when they are defeated).

It's definitely a comic written for gamers by a gamer, but it's just a great, hilarious story on top of that, with very memorable, relatable characters. I highly recommend it, and I hope the game and movie are even half as fun a ride as the comic has been so far. :)

I'm definitely going to check out the movie, I was hooked after just one preview (the setup reminded me of No More Heroes). I guess I should get around to reading the comic series too. :duh:

Same exact thing for me, I honestly didn't know anything about the series until SarshelYam posted that game footage. After seeing the previews I'm super excited for this.

I finished the last book of the comic tonight. Totally epic. I'm sad that it's over, but at least I still have the game and the movie to look forward to. I don't think either will be a substitute for the comic, though. But I'm totally looking forward to how the game plays out, since the comic itself is so video game-like.

A tiny sample of the game references throughout the books:

(This was from the back cover of one of the books, not the game that Ubisoft is making, heh. The most recent book also has all of the main characters in an epic sprite battle on the back cover.)

Also, some of the books' title pages are parodies of game logos, such as Bonk, Sonic 2, and Double Dragon. :)

EDIT: I totally missed this on my first readthrough...

It might be a stretch, but is that supposed to be the black sesame seed?! That totally fits the comic, thematically, too.

Any comic with Earthbound-inspired dream sequences is AUTOMATICALLY AWESOME. (And even if that's not supposed to be the sesame seed, there's at least one other Earthbound reference I know of.)

I'll be honest, I had never heard of this until I heard about the film and the gaming references. Something tells me I might have to look into the comics sometime...

I just finished reading volume one yesterday and it was great! I'll probably order another volume or two soon since I've been reading a lot of comics lately.
