Well, what did happen? Did the prototypes get destroyed? Is Nintendo keeping them in a vault somewhere? Did anyone buy any of them like Nightram and his Banjo figure?

Technically they could be anywhere. Toysite did auction off some of the figures from the line (most of which Nightram did buy) but as for the ones seen only in the photos your guess is as good as mine.

Aside from closing companies selling off a their unused "material", some of the employees could have kept them, given them away, or maybe they were sent back to Nintendo.

To my knowledge the Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, and other ones that were not sold on Ebay have not been located. There was that Zelda in the box that was found in a thrift store on the West Coast- so based on that these could be anywhere. I think a majority of that depends on what the last owner did with them. And remember that there is only like...one or two in existence so the chances that they will be found by the right person at the right time is slim.

I think the best way to come across them would be to search in those collectible stores that buy and sell with people off the street. I think it all comes down to chance. Who knows, maybe someone in your town has one of 'em. Yah never know!

BD&A created a company called ToySite to manage and expand its Nintendo licenses. BD&A was responsible for the very popular bean bag plush line and also had several cases and what-not. Their cases are still around today, but they have since dropped out of figures and plushes for Nintendo licenses.
Toysite had a website that never really got off the ground. They pulled it nearly as soon as it went up. On it, they showed the figure line and the upcoming stuff they had ideas for. They had come out with the very last in the "BD&A" line of plushes, where you see the Tosite tag, and also the Nintendo bobbleheads. It was all taken down, and the company branch folded for undisclosed reasons. That was around 9-11 though, when a lot of companies scaled back a lot of things.
They had a license for DK64, Legend of Zelda (OoT) Super Mario, and Pokemon. They had planned everything from figures to candy.
Here are some of the things they showed:

I remember some Pokemon, like Pikachu and Squirtle were on top of some candy holders, and when you hit a button they would move and hand you the candy pellets. They were cute.
In regards to the auctions, I believe I caught the second set posted, and all of the first ones (Mario with plunger gun, Luigi with wrench thing, and maybe the Zelda stuff) were already sold.

I think with all that effort that Nightram put into his awesome post, that this topic should become the definitive topic where all conversation about these prototypes should be held.

I already knew all of that stuff but I definitely couldn't have said it better than that.

That concept art looks pretty frakking awesome. Did any ever get past the "Drawing Board"?

I swear I had pics of the concept art for Mario and Luigi with their ridiculous guns, but can't find it. The rest never made it past.

Hey, what's with this pic?

Image

Is that a prototype plastic head DKC plush that didn't make it into the set with Diddy, DK, Cranky, and Funky? How many other types didn't make it either? And how difficult would it be to obtain these prototype plastic head plushes?

That was series 2 of the DK plastic head plushes. Lanky, Chunky, Tiny, Kremmling, and K. Rool were in it. How to obtain them? Well, I own the only ones on the planet . . . so . . .

I really wish toysite was still in bussiness, I really wanted those Mario and Donkey kong toy lines.

Me too. Always nice to have some N64-era merch, because there really wasn't enough (not in the US at least). The sculpts may not have been good, but other than the Mario Kart 64/Diddy Kong Racing lines, these were the most complete. :Diddymad:

Could I get a group picture of those?

I guess I'll just have to wait to get them until you list the set on ebay in a few years for $20,000. Or since there are 5, maybe it'd be $100,000! :D

Why Nintendo, why didn't you actually release those Wing Cap and Metal Mario figure? I would have bought those in less than a nanosecond.

Had nothing to do with Nintendo, unless Nintendo decided to pull the license, but that would be odd. More likely, BD&A/Toysite decided not to renew the license, or decided to focus the company a little more because that line was unproven at that point.

Whoa! So many amazing items that would have flown of the shelves and been worth so much today!

I would pay obscene amounts of money for that K. Rool plush. Provided I actually had obscene amounts of money, of course. :P

It's quite cool to see all these prototypes, though. There's some really interesting stuff in there.

Nightram, I believe this is the concept art you're talking about:

It really seems like they had a thing for that rocket shooting accessory, because Mario, luigi, sheik and fox all have items in that vein.

As mastershambler said, I think this line would've flown off the shelves. It's a shame it didn't come to be, but at least we had Toybiz pick up most of the slack with their mario kart, zelda and diddy kong racing lines, and didn't toysite release a couple of figures from the dkc tv show line?

Off-topic, but Nightram, did you make your sig, or was it an SSB promotional image, or what, because either way it looks sweet.

Edit: Are the picture links I posted dead for everyone else? I'm not sure what happened.

Yup, that's the right concept art! Well, the one I could load anyway. Weird.

That SSB image is from a pencil tin and a pencil sharpener made by Takara. Cool isn't it?!
